日常語 — Daily Life Japanese

Lesson 24 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning daily life japanese: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (permission + daily life expressions), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

The phrases that make a city feel like home: permission requests, polite refusals, expressions of gratitude beyond ありがとう, and the small Japanese moments that happen dozens of times a day.

東京の一日 — A Tokyo Day

The daily texture of Tokyo: precision and courtesy at every scale. The escalator — everyone stands left in Osaka, right in Tokyo (on the left, walk on the right). The convenience store — every transaction ends in a bow. The restaurant — いただきます before you eat; ごちそうさまでした when you leave.

The stranger is now five days into Tokyo. He notices: the phrases are accumulating into reflexes. 「お先にどうぞ」 at the elevator — someone smiles. 「お邪魔します」 entering the pottery shop in Yanaka — the owner nods warmly. 「いただきます」 before his konbini onigiri — the woman at the checkout glances over and nods, visibly pleased.

These are not words for survival. They are words for belonging. The difference between a tourist in Tokyo and someone who lives there is measured, partly, in exactly these small phrases — offered at exactly the right moments.
