Lesson 43 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning preference comparisons: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (preference comparisons with のほうが), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Reading and writing food reviews — from Tabelog scores to handwritten notes on ramen shop walls. How Tokyo talks about food when comparing experiences.

Writing a Review

After a week in Tokyo, the stranger had opinions. Strong ones. He opened his notebook and started writing — not scores, but comparisons.

Afuri was lighter. Better for summer. Fuunji was richer. A winter bowl.

He preferred counters. You could watch the chef work. The intimacy mattered.

Evening was always better. The lanterns, the steam, the quiet hum of conversation.

Reviews over ratings. A 3.2 on Tabelog could hide a masterpiece. A 4.0 could be overrated. Value mattered too.
