Lesson 51 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning intentions: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (expressing intentions with つもり), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Planning a food adventure through Tokyo's backstreets. Afuri Ramen (AFURI), Ebisu — a yuzu shio ramen shop where every bowl starts with intention: the broth has been simmering since dawn.

AFURI 恵比寿 — The Plan

The stranger arrives in Ebisu at noon. He has a plan. 「今日は三軒回るつもりです。」 Three ramen shops in one afternoon. AFURI is the first stop — the yuzu shio ramen shop tucked beneath the railway tracks.

The queue is already fifteen deep. In Tokyo, a good line means good broth. He waits. Twenty minutes. The ticket machine offers choices: yuzu shio, miso, tsukemen. 「柚子塩ラーメンを試すつもりです。」 He feeds coins into the machine.

The bowl arrives in six minutes. Clear golden broth, a circle of yuzu oil floating on top. Thin noodles. Chashu sliced paper-thin. He takes the first sip and understands: the broth tastes like mountains and citrus groves.

By 1pm the bowl is empty. His notebook reads: AFURI — complete. Two more shops to go. But his stomach disagrees. 「お腹がいっぱいになりました。」 The plan changes. Tokyo teaches patience.
