お会計 — Paying and Departure

Lesson 20 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning paying and departure: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (departure phrases + payment vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

The end of the meal is as deliberate as its beginning. Asking for the bill, settling it quietly, thanking the chef directly, and leaving with the right final words — these are the last impressions you leave.

The final course: a small bowl of miso soup, rice, pickles. Then the sencha tea. The meal has been two hours, sixteen courses, and one experience that will require several days to fully absorb.

「お会計をお願いします。」 The bill arrives in a wooden folder. He opens it, places his card. No discussion needed — the amount matches what was agreed at booking.

Standing up, he turns to Chef Kondo, who is already preparing the first piece for the next guest. 「ごちそうさまでした。素晴らしかったです。またうかがいます。」

Chef Kondo looks up. The first time he has looked directly at the stranger all evening. He gives a slow, deliberate nod. 「ありがとうございました。」

In the elevator down to Ginza, the stranger realizes he doesn't know how to describe what just happened. He starts practicing how to say: 今まで食べた中で一番でした。
