おかわり — Ordering More Rounds

Lesson 8 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning ordering more rounds: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (okawari + same again + new orders), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

The second hour of the izakaya session. The first round of dishes is finished, the beers are empty, and the conversation is flowing. You need to order more — efficiently, warmly, correctly.

二杯目のビール · The Second Beer

The izakaya session in Shimokitazawa has been running for ninety minutes. The karaage is finished. The edamame is finished. The first beers are long gone. Tanaka-san signals the staff with a simple raise of the hand — never a snap of fingers, never a loud call. The hand raised slightly, eye contact made. The staff arrives.

The stranger says: 「おかわりをください。生ビールをふたつ。」 — O-kawari o kudasai. Nama bīru o futatsu. Same again. Two draft beers.

When they arrive, the stranger says: 「私がおごります。」 — Watashi ga ogorimasu. It's on me. Tanaka-san protests in Japanese — the required protest. The stranger insists. They lift their glasses. 「乾杯!」

The evening continues. The city outside is still loud. Inside is warm.
