(Dochira ga suki desu ka) — Asking Preferences

Lesson 33 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning asking preferences: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (asking and answering preferences), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A sake tasting in Shibuya, Tokyo — a small sake bar with 40 varieties, where the sommelier guides you through junmai, ginjo, and daiginjo, and you learn to say which you prefer.

A Night of Sake

The sake bar in Shibuya is narrow, eight seats, and 40 bottles behind the counter. The sommelier knows every one. She pours small tastes into ceramic cups and waits for your reaction.

She started with the fundamental question. The stranger had no idea.

She poured two. Junmai: full-bodied, earthy, rice-forward. Ginjo: lighter, floral, clean finish. He preferred the ginjo.

Dry or sweet? He found sweet easier. She nodded and poured a daiginjo from Niigata.

The best one yet.
