最終評価 — Final Assessment

Lesson 65 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning final assessment: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (final assessment — all flavor grammar), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A farewell bowl of soba at Kanda Matsuya (神田まつや), Kanda — open since 1884. The last meal in Tokyo, the final grammar, and everything you've learned at Flavor level, gathered in one bowl.

神田まつや — The Farewell

Kanda Matsuya has been serving soba since 1884. The building survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and the firebombing of Tokyo. The recipe has not changed. The noodles are cut by hand every morning, the tsuyu simmered from katsuobushi and kombu.

It is the stranger's last day. 「東京を離れる前に、蕎麦を食べるつもりです。」 He walks from Kanda Station through streets he now recognizes. The wooden facade of Matsuya appears — dark, dignified, unchanged.

He orders mori soba — cold noodles on a bamboo tray. The tsuyu arrives in a small cup. He dips, slurps, and the buckwheat flavor fills his mouth. 「蕎麦をすすりながら、東京での思い出を振り返りました。」

After the noodles, the server brings sobayu — the starchy cooking water. He pours it into the remaining tsuyu and drinks. This is how soba ends. 「お世話になりました。また来ます。」 The master bows. Tokyo will wait.
