You are learning paying the bill: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (o-kaikei o kudasai + payment phrases), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Any izakaya, late evening. The dishes are finished. The conversation is wrapping up. In Japan, the bill is usually paid at the register on the way out — not at the table.
Leaving a Japanese restaurant well is as important as entering it well. The sequence is specific: ask for the bill (at the table or go to the register), pay, receive your change, and then — this is the critical moment — say gochisōsama deshita loudly and clearly on the way out.
The stranger raises a hand: 「すみません!お会計をください。」 The staff brings the total. Four people, two hours, many dishes. The number is smaller than expected — izakayas are not expensive if you eat communally.
「割り勘にしましょう。」 — Warikan ni shimashō. Let's split equally. Everyone agrees immediately. This is Japan.
At the door, the stranger turns and says: 「とても美味しかったです!ごちそうさまでした!」 The entire staff responds: 「ありがとうございました!またどうぞ!」 The night was good. The exit was correct.
