Lesson 44 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning superlatives in context: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (superlatives with scope and context), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Ameyoko Market in Ueno — haggling vendors, stacked dried fish, chocolate mountains, and the energy of Tokyo's most democratic market street.

Ameyoko Treasures

Ameyoko runs 500 meters between Ueno and Okachimachi stations, under the elevated railway tracks. Once a black market, now a democratic bazaar: dried fish piled high, chocolate sold by the kilogram, spices from everywhere, and vendors who shout prices into the crowd.

The stranger walked the full length. No market in Tokyo had this energy.

At a dried fish stall, he tasted samples. The best dried fish he'd ever had. Smoky, salty, perfect with beer.

He asked a vendor. Everyone pointed in different directions. The whole market was a bargain.

He bought a kilogram of chocolate for 1000 yen.
