〜より (yori) — Basic Comparisons

Lesson 41 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning basic comparisons: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (basic comparisons with より), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

An izakaya in Shinjuku, Tokyo — comparing dishes side by side. Grilled fish versus simmered fish. Cold tofu versus hot tofu. Every order is a comparison.

Comparing at the Izakaya

The izakaya in Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho — "Memory Lane" — is barely wide enough for ten people. The menu is handwritten on wooden boards. Everything is grilled, simmered, or raw. The trick is knowing what to compare.

The stranger asked. He preferred grilled. The char, the crisp skin.

Cold tofu arrived alongside hot tofu. Side by side. In winter, warm wins.

This place was cheaper than next door. And better. But the beer was better next door. Trade-offs.

Today's sashimi was much fresher. Some days you get lucky.
