In this lesson

You are learning conditionals: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (conditional expressions with たら), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Mapping Tokyo plans with if-then thinking. Ichiran Ramen (一蘭), Shibuya — the solo-booth ramen chain where every decision is conditional: if spicy, then level 3; if rich, then extra chashu.

一蘭 渋谷 — If, Then

Ichiran is a ramen restaurant designed for solitude. Each seat has partitions — wooden dividers that block your neighbors. You face a bamboo curtain. Behind it, hands appear with your bowl. You never see the cook's face.

The stranger fills out the order sheet. Every choice is conditional. 「もし辛かったら、水を頼もう。」 He circles "spicy level 3." If the broth is too rich, he can thin it with the provided water. 「濃かったら、薄めよう。」

The curtain lifts. A bowl of tonkotsu ramen, the broth white as milk. He takes the first sip. It is perfect — rich but not heavy, spicy but not burning. A small button on the wall glows red: the kaedama button. 「もしまだお腹が空いていたら、替え玉を頼もう。」

He presses it. The curtain rises again. More noodles appear. Tokyo's conditional logic: if hungry, then eat.
