Lesson 22 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning tokyo neighborhoods: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (neighborhood navigation vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Shimokitazawa, Yanaka, Shimokitazawa, Koenji, Kagurazaka — Tokyo's older, quieter neighborhoods where the city's actual daily life happens. Finding things, asking locals, navigating by landmark.

谷中の路地 — The Lanes of Yanaka

Yanaka is one of Tokyo's most beloved neighborhoods — a maze of wooden houses, old temples, independent shotengai, and cats. Lots of cats. The famous Yanaka Ginza shotengai sells handmade senbei, fresh tofu, croquettes, and items that haven't changed in forty years.

The stranger is looking for a specific pottery shop that a friend recommended — a family business selling handmade yunomi (tea cups) in a wooden house. He asks at the tofu stall.

「あの、この辺に陶芸のお店はありますか。」 The tofu seller takes off his apron, thinks. 「ああ、田中さんのお店ですか。路地を入って、二つ目の角を左に曲がると、赤い暖簾のお店がありますよ。」

「目印は赤い暖簾ですね。」 He confirms. 「そうそう!すぐわかります。」 Ten minutes later: a red noren curtain, a small wooden sign. Inside: sixty years of yunomi.
