どこですか — Asking Where Things Are

Lesson 3 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning asking where things are: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (doko desu ka? + direction vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Shinjuku Station — the busiest train station in the world, 200 exits, 50 platforms, 3.5 million passengers daily. You need to find the South Exit. You need to ask in Japanese.

新宿駅の南口 · Shinjuku South Exit

Shinjuku Station has 200 exits. This is not a metaphor or an exaggeration — there are literally 200 numbered and named exits. The South Exit (Minamiguchi) leads to the Takashimaya department store and one of Tokyo's great ramen alleys. The stranger needs the South Exit. The station map shows only Japanese.

A woman in a blue uniform — station staff — is standing near a pillar. The stranger walks up and says: 「すみません。南口はどこですか?」 — Sumimasen. Minamiguchi wa doko desu ka?

The woman bows slightly and points. 「まっすぐ行って、右です。五分くらいです。」 — Massugu itte, migi desu. Go-fun kurai desu. Straight ahead, on the right. About five minutes.

The stranger nods. 「わかりました。ありがとうございます。」 The woman bows again. Shinjuku Station suddenly makes sense. The South Exit is exactly where she said.
