You are learning paying and departure: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (departure vocabulary + closing phrases), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
The end of a Chinese meal is as full of ritual as the beginning. Who pays, how to accept graciously, what to say to the host and the kitchen, and the warmth of the final goodbye.
The meal has lasted three hours. Five dishes, two rounds of tea, a pot of Longjing, one Moutai toast (completed in tea). The lazy Susan has been rotating gently through all of it.
The bill fight: the host has already arranged it. The stranger's card is declined at the table — it has already been paid. 「已经付了!下次你来请!」
At the door: 「今晚非常感谢!菜太好吃了,厨师手艺真的很好!请转告厨师。」 The server bows. 「一定转告!」 She will.
His host grabs his arm. 「下次你来上海一定要告诉我!」 Next time you're in Shanghai, tell me. 「一定!期待下次见面!」
Outside: the Bund, the river, the Pudong skyline. The stranger stands for a moment before getting in the taxi. He thinks: 下次一定要来。 He means it completely.
