Lesson 45 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning food culture expressions: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (food expressions, proverbs, and cultural grammar), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A final evening in Shanghai — reflections on food philosophy, cultural expressions, and the deeper meanings behind Chinese eating. Food is language. Language is food.

最后一个晚上 — The Last Evening

The final evening in Shanghai. A round table at a local restaurant near Jing'an Temple. Eight dishes, a bottle of Shaoxing wine, and the friends she had made over two weeks.

「民以食为天,」 said the eldest at the table, raising his glass. 「在中国,吃饭不只是吃饭。」 In China, eating is not just eating. He was right. Every meal had been a lesson — in language, in culture, in connection.

「这两个星期,上海的食物比我想象的更好。」 These two weeks, Shanghai's food was better than I imagined. 「跟家里的饭不一样,但是一样温暖。」 Different from home cooking, but equally warm.

「干杯!」 Cheers! Everyone raised their glasses. 「慢慢吃。」 Eat slowly. 「色香味俱全。」 Color, aroma, flavor — all present. She looked at the table, at the faces lit by warm light. 「吃饱了。心也饱了。」 Full stomach. Full heart, too.
