如果有时间 — Conditionals

Lesson 54 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning conditionals: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (conditional sentences), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Making contingent plans in Shanghai — if the weather is good, if there's time, if the restaurant isn't full. The grammar of possibility applied to the city's unpredictable delights.

上海的雨 — Shanghai Rain

It is day four. The stranger wakes to grey sky and the sound of rain against the hotel window. He checks his phone — Mei has already messaged: 「今天下雨了。要是你不想出去的话,我们可以改计划。」

He replies: 「如果雨不大,我还是想去田子坊。」 If the rain isn't heavy, he still wants to visit Tianzifang. Mei sends a voice message: 「好!万一雨太大,我们就去附近的面馆,我知道一家很好的葱油拌面。」

By noon the rain softens to a mist. They walk into Tianzifang's narrow alleys — the stone wet, the lanterns glowing, the smell of scallion oil drifting from a window. 「如果每次下雨都能吃到这么好的面,我希望天天下雨。」 If it could rain like this every day, he would wish for rain forever.
