听不懂 — Confusion Recovery

Lesson 5 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning confusion recovery: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (confusion recovery + 能), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Everywhere in Shanghai. The moment when a local speaks Shanghainese dialect, or fires Mandarin at the speed of a native speaker. These phrases keep you in the conversation.

上海话 — The Shanghainese Moment

Two older women are talking in the taxi queue at Hongqiao station. Rapid, musical, completely opaque to the stranger — not because his Mandarin is poor, but because they're speaking Shanghainese, which sounds nothing like Mandarin.

The taxi dispatcher waves him over. He says something. The stranger catches nothing. He smiles. 「对不起,我听不懂。能说普通话吗?」

The dispatcher switches immediately. 「去哪里?」 (Where to?) The stranger shows his phone with the destination in characters. The dispatcher nods. 「上那辆。」 (Get in that one.)

「谢谢!」 In the taxi: the driver asks something at speed. 「能说慢一点吗?我中文不太好。」 The driver laughs, repeats slowly. The stranger understands. 「懂了!」

Every confusion recovered. Every exchange complete. This is what the repair toolkit enables.
