Lesson 41 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning a比b + adjective: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (a 比 (bǐ) b + adj = a is more [adj] than b), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A Shanghainese home kitchen — comparing dishes at the family table. Grandma's red-braised pork vs. the restaurant version. 比 structures the debate.

奶奶的厨房 — Grandma's Kitchen

The kitchen smelled of star anise and soy sauce. Grandma had been cooking 红烧肉 since before dawn. The pork belly sat in a clay pot, caramelized and glistening.

「奶奶的红烧肉比餐厅的好吃。」 Grandma's braised pork is tastier than the restaurant's. Her grandson said it with certainty. 「比Fu 1088的还好。」 Even better than Fu 1088's.

Grandma laughed. 「我做了五十年了。」 I've been making it for fifty years. She brought out another dish. 「这个比昨天的咸一点儿。」 This one is a bit saltier than yesterday's. 「你觉得怎么样?」

He tasted. 「今天的比昨天的甜一点儿。」 Today's is a bit sweeter than yesterday's. 「哪个更好?」 Which is better? 「都好。但是奶奶做的比谁做的都好吃。」 Both are good. But grandma's is tastier than anyone's.
