我叫 — Introducing Yourself

Lesson 4 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning introducing yourself: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (我叫 + introduction pattern), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A business dinner in Shanghai's Xintiandi district. Your Chinese hosts have made a reservation. Someone turns to you. The Chinese introduction is brief, warm, and expects reciprocity.

新天地的晚宴 — Xintiandi Business Dinner

Xintiandi is Shanghai's preserved shikumen neighborhood — 1920s stone-gate architecture converted into restaurants, bars, and boutiques. The dinner is at a private room in a Shanghainese restaurant. Twelve people around a round table, the lazy Susan already loaded with cold dishes.

The host introduces the stranger to his business partner. She extends her hand. 「你好!我叫王丽。」 The stranger responds: 「你好!我叫[名字],我从纽约来,很高兴认识你!」

She smiles. 「你的中文很好!」 He shakes his head. 「哪里哪里!我还在学。」 She laughs. The host pours the baijiu. 「我们干杯!」

The lazy Susan begins to spin. Dishes arrive — hairy crab, steamed fish with ginger, drunken chicken cold. This is how Shanghai business relationships begin: at a round table, with baijiu, with food that arrived before the conversation did.
