Lesson 8 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning ordering more: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (再来 + measure words for ordering more), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A Shanghai hot pot restaurant or Shanghainese lunch. The table is full, but everyone wants more. The art of ordering additional rounds at a Chinese table.

大桌子 — The Round Table

Eight people around the lazy Susan. The table fills in layers — cold dishes first (drunken chicken, smoked fish, pickled vegetables), then hot dishes as they finish, then dumplings as the finale. Ordering at a Chinese table is a continuous conversation, not a single event.

The first round of xiaolongbao disappears in four minutes. The stranger reaches for the lazy Susan and finds it empty. 「服务员!再来一份小笼包!」

His host waves. 「今天我请!不用抢!」 (Today I'm treating — don't fight over it!) The stranger laughs. He knows the script — protest twice, then accept. 「不行不行,让我来吧!」 His host insists. Second insistence: accepted. 「太谢谢了!」

By the third round, the table is quiet with eating. Someone says: 「太撑了!」 Everyone agrees. The final plate of noodles arrives anyway.
