Lesson 63 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning market stories: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (narration & experience grammar), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

The wet market is where Shanghai's real food stories live. At 铜川路水产市场 and neighborhood markets, vendors become teachers, and every ingredient has a biography.

豆腐阿姨 — The Tofu Auntie

Six in the morning. The stranger follows Mei into a neighborhood wet market near Jing'an Temple. The air is thick with the smell of fresh greens, live fish, and steam rising from a soy milk vendor.

They stop at a tofu stall. The woman behind the counter — round face, quick hands — has been here since 4am. 「听说这个阿姨卖豆腐卖了三十年了,」 Mei whispers. 「她是这个市场最有名的。」

The stranger points at a block of silken tofu. 「这个是什么豆腐?我从来没见过这么嫩的。」 The auntie smiles: 「这是嫩豆腐,今天早上刚做的。尝尝!」 She slices a piece, drizzles soy sauce. It trembles on the spoon like custard.

「这是最地道的上海味道,」 Mei says. 「超市里买不到。」 You can't buy this in a supermarket. The market is the story.
