跟...一样 — Expressing Equality

Lesson 42 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning expressing equality: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (a 跟 (gēn) b 一样 (yíyàng) + adj — a is as [adj] as b), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A conversation comparing Shanghai and Beijing food cultures — rivalries, similarities, and the diplomatic art of saying "they're the same."

上海 vs 北京 — The Eternal Rivalry

The conversation started innocently. 「上海菜跟北京菜一样好吃吗?」 Is Shanghai food as delicious as Beijing food? A dangerous question in any Chinese city.

The Shanghainese friend was diplomatic. 「差不多。各有特色。」 More or less. Each has its own character. 「上海的小笼包跟北京的饺子不一样。」 Shanghai's xiaolongbao and Beijing's dumplings are different. 「完全不一样的风格。」 Completely different styles.

The Beijing friend smiled. 「北京烤鸭跟上海的红烧肉一样有名。」 Peking duck is as famous as Shanghai's braised pork. 「都很好吃,但是做法不一样。」 Both delicious, but the methods are different.

They agreed on one thing: 「中国菜跟世界上任何菜一样丰富。」 Chinese food is as rich as any cuisine in the world. 「可能更丰富。」 Maybe richer. On this, there was no debate.
