A Shanghai wet market or street food stall. Everything has a price and the price is often negotiable — or at least discussable. Numbers 1–10 and the key price questions.
The Yu Garden market in the Old City sells everything from silk to street food to tourist goods. The prices at most stalls are starting prices — not final prices. The stranger is buying a bamboo steamer from a vendor near the garden entrance.
「多少钱?」 The vendor holds up ten fingers: 100 yuan. The stranger looks skeptical. 「太贵了!」 The vendor laughs — this is the correct response. The negotiation is fun, not hostile.
Back and forth. 70. 60. 55. The stranger gestures with his phone — 「可以用支付宝吗?」 The vendor nods. 「五十五块,好吧?」 55 yuan, okay?
The stranger nods. 「好的。」 He scans the QR code. The vendor shows him the payment confirmation. Both satisfied. The steamer is beautiful, and 55 yuan is approximately eight dollars.
