You are learning night food: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (craving & exclamation structures), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Shouning Road after dark — Shanghai's legendary night food street. Crawfish, grilled skewers, cold beer, and the grammar of late-night cravings under neon light.
Ten at night. The stranger follows Wei into a wall of noise and steam. Shouning Road is barely wide enough for a car, but tonight it belongs to plastic tables, red lanterns, and the sound of crawfish shells cracking.
「我好馋!」 Wei says, and orders without sitting down: three jin of garlic crawfish (蒜蓉小龙虾), a plate of grilled lamb skewers (烤羊肉串), and four cold Tsingtao beers.
They sit. The crawfish arrives in a mountain of red, glistening with garlic and chili oil. The stranger peels one — Mei taught him the technique yesterday — and the meat is firm, sweet, spicy. 「怎么这么好吃?」
「越吃越辣,越辣越过瘾,」 Wei grins. 「再来一份!」 They order more. The clock passes midnight. Nobody leaves. 「半夜了还在吃,」 the stranger says. 「这就是上海。」
