Una noche madrileña — Late Dining Culture

Lesson 49 of 150 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning late dining culture: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (complete dinner conversation — ordering, reacting, reflecting), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A 10pm dinner in Malasaña — because in Madrid, the night is just beginning. Reviewing all structures through the rhythm of a late Spanish dinner: ordering, conversation, opinions, and the beauty of eating when the rest of Europe is asleep.

Las Once de la Noche — Dinner in Malasaña

It is ten fifteen on a Thursday night. The stranger and his friends push open the door of La Muca de Prado, a small restaurant on a side street in Malasaña. The kitchen is in full swing. Every table is full.

« ¿Qué nos recomienda para empezar? Queremos algo para compartir. » « Las croquetas de boletus y el salmorejo cordobés. Para mí, después, el rabo de toro. Y de beber, un Ribera del Duero. »

The rabo arrives — braised for hours, falling apart, in a deep brown sauce. « Está riquísimo. Nunca he probado un rabo de toro tan tierno. ¿Qué te parece, María? » « Me encanta. »

It is midnight. Nobody has asked for the check. Me encanta cenar así — a las once de la noche, sin prisa, como un madrileño. Ha sido una noche perfecta.
