Lesson 36 of 150 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning basic comparisons: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (comparatives: más + adjective + que), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Comparing two dishes at a restaurant in La Latina. The tortilla at one bar versus the tortilla at another. The eternal Madrid debate begins with a simple structure.

La Guerra de las Tortillas · The Tortilla Wars

En Madrid, la tortilla de patatas no es solo un plato — es una identidad. Cada bar tiene la suya, y cada madrileño sabe cuál es la mejor. La discusión es eterna.

The traveller has tried three tortillas in two days. Time to compare. « La tortilla de Casa Dani es más jugosa que la de Café Gijón. Tiene más cebolla y el centro está más cremoso. »

« Pero la de Café Gijón es más grande que la de Casa Dani. La ración es más generosa. Y la de Botín es más crujiente por fuera y más tierna por dentro. »

Javier listens and shakes his head. « La de mi madre es más rica que todas. Y es menos cara. Gratis. » In Madrid, no tortilla will ever be better than the one your mother makes.
