At a Paris dinner party, cooking class, or the table next to yours at Septime. French introductions are warm but measured — first name, where you're from, and the phrase that creates immediate goodwill.
The cooking class at La Cuisine Paris in the Marais starts at 10am. Six students, one chef instructor, a kitchen full of mise en place. Everyone is introducing themselves around a butcher's block.
The student from Brazil: «Je m'appelle Rodrigo. Je suis de São Paulo. J'apprends le français depuis trois mois. Soyez patients avec moi !» Everyone laughs. The ice is immediately broken.
The woman from Tokyo: «Je m'appelle Yuki. Je suis ici pour apprendre la sauce beurre blanc.»
The stranger's turn. «Bonjour ! Je m'appelle [name]. Je suis de [city]. J'apprends le français — et j'adore déjà Paris.»
The chef looks up from his knife. «Vous parlez très bien français !»
«Pas du tout, mais merci beaucoup !» The stranger smiles. «Je suis ici pour la gastronomie — et pour apprendre à cuisiner comme un Parisien.»
The chef nods. «Alors, commençons.» Let's begin.
