Ra về — Paying and Farewell

Lesson 20 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning paying and farewell: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (departure vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

The end of a Vietnamese meal — as full of ritual as the beginning. Who pays, how to accept graciously, what to say to the cook, and the warmth of the final goodbye that creates a lasting connection.

Ra Về — The Farewell ~150 words · Unit 4 finale

Three hours at the table. Four dishes, two rounds of bia hơi, one small glass of rice wine. The bill fight has already happened — Minh paid while the stranger was in the bathroom. He comes back to an empty bill tray.

「Đã trả rồi! Lần sau bạn mời!」 Already paid. Next time you treat.

At the door of the restaurant: 「Tối nay vui và ngon quá! Cảm ơn Minh nhiều lắm! Đầu bếp nấu giỏi quá — nhờ chuyển lời!」

The server bows. 「Dạ, nhất định chuyển lời!」 I'll definitely pass it along.

Minh grabs the stranger's arm: 「Lần sau anh/chị đến Hà Nội, nhớ liên lạc trước nhé!」 Next time you're in Hanoi, contact me in advance.

「Nhất định! Giữ liên lạc nhé! Bảo trọng! Hẹn sớm gặp lại!」

Outside: the motorbikes, the night air, the smell of the city. He thinks: Lần sau nhất định đến lại. He means it completely.
