Nhat — Superlatives

Lesson 34 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning superlatives: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (superlatives with nhat), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Street food crawl through Hoan Kiem. You have eaten at many stalls now. Time to rank them — the best, the most famous, the cheapest. Nhat turns any adjective into a superlative.

Street Food Rankings — The Best of Hanoi

After three weeks of eating, the stranger has a ranking. He writes it in his notebook at a bia hoi corner:

「Pho ngon nhat: Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan. Nuoc dung thanh, thit bo tuoi, khong can them gi ca.」

「Bun cha noi tieng nhat: Bun Cha Huong Lien. Tai vi Obama da an o day.」

「Ca phe trung tot nhat: Cafe Giang. Quan cu nhat, truyen thong nhat, ngon nhat.」

「Do an duong pho re nhat: banh mi o pho Hang Buom. Hai muoi nghin thoi!」

A Hanoian at the next table reads over his shoulder. 「Danh sach tot lam! Nhung cha ca La Vong dau? Do la mon dat nhat nhung cung dac biet nhat!」

The stranger adds it. The list grows. In Hanoi, every ranking sparks a new argument.
