Lesson 2 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning numbers and prices: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (numbers + price vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Chợ Đồng Xuân or any Hanoi street food stall. Prices in thousands of đồng — 50,000 VND ≈ $2. Three phrases unlock every transaction.

Chợ Đồng Xuân — Market Arithmetic

Đồng Xuân Market in Hanoi's Old Quarter is a three-storey covered market. The stranger has learned one fact: everything is in thousands, and 100,000 VND is roughly four dollars.

He picks up a papaya. 「Bao nhiêu tiền?」 The woman holds up three fingers. 30,000 VND. He tilts his head: 「Đắt quá!」 She laughs. It's a ritual. She holds up two and a half — 25,000.

「Được rồi.」 He pays with two 20,000 notes. She produces a crumpled 15,000 in change. He waves it off. She shakes her head, insists. 「Cảm ơn.」 He takes it. Correct behavior: always take your change.
