Cho toi — Confident Ordering

Lesson 35 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning confident ordering: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (advanced ordering: cho toi + modifications), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A com binh dan in Hoan Kiem. You now have pronouns, preferences, opinions, and superlatives. Time to order a full meal with confidence — customizing, asking questions, expressing exactly what you want.

The Confident Order — Com Binh Dan Mastery

The stranger enters a com binh dan he has been to three times. The woman behind the counter recognizes him. 「Lai den roi!」 He smiles — being a regular.

「Chi oi, cho em com voi thit kho. Them rau xao nhe. Va mot bat canh.」

She starts plating. He adds: 「Khong co hanh nhe chi. Va it ot hon — hom truoc cay qua!」 She laughs, remembers. Adjusts.

「Them nuoc cham de rieng duoc khong?」 She puts a small dish on the side. Perfect.

He eats. The thit kho is ngon nhat — sweet, soft, dark caramel. He waves for attention: 「Chi oi, them mot phan thit kho nua duoc khong? Ngon qua!」

She beams. He orders with the confidence of someone who knows exactly what he wants. This is what 100 words buys you in Hanoi.
