You are learning coffee culture: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (coffee vocabulary + hanoi café culture), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Café Giang (Giảng Cà Phê), 39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân — originator of cà phê trứng (egg coffee), invented in 1946 when fresh milk was scarce. A thick sweet egg yolk cream over strong Robusta coffee. Hanoi's most distinctive drink.
Café Giang is three floors of low wooden furniture and old photographs, up a narrow staircase off Nguyễn Hữu Huân. The egg coffee was invented here in 1946 by Nguyễn Văn Giang, who substituted whipped egg yolk for milk during the French war when dairy was rationed. His son now runs it.
The stranger sits by the window — rain on Hoàn Kiếm Lake visible below. 「Cho tôi một cà phê trứng nóng.」 It arrives: a small glass nested inside a ceramic bowl of hot water. On top: thick pale yellow cream.
「Cà phê này làm thế nào?」 The server explains with genuine pleasure — every time, genuine pleasure. He sips. The cream is sweet, the coffee underneath bitter. Together: one of the best things he has tasted.
「Đặc biệt quá! Hà Nội cà phê ngon nhất thế giới!」
