Tot hon / Kem hon — Better and Worse

Lesson 43 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning better and worse: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (better, worse, and quality judgments), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Reading and writing food reviews at a cafe near Hoan Kiem Lake. You can now say what is better, what is worse, and what has improved or declined. The grammar of judgment.

The Review — Better and Worse

The stranger sits at a cafe with his notebook, writing reviews of everywhere he has eaten in Hanoi. He has opinions now — informed, specific, comparative.

「Pho Gia Truyen: nuoc dung tot hon Pho Thin. Nhung Pho Thin co khong khi vui hon.」

「Bun Cha Huong Lien: noi tieng nhat nhung chat luong kem hon mot so quan nho. Quan du lich hoa roi.」

「Cafe Giang: ca phe trung ngay cang tot hon. Lan nay ngon hon lan truoc nhieu.」

A Vietnamese food blogger sitting nearby reads over his shoulder. 「Ban viet danh gia gioi lam! Nhung Bun Cha Huong Lien khong kem dau — chi la dong khach hon thoi.」

The stranger revises: 「Dung roi. Khong phai kem hon — chi la khac truoc.」 Not worse. Just different from before. The nuance of a true reviewer.
