You are learning arriving: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (arrival + seating vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Walking into a Hanoi restaurant — the greeting, being seated, opening tea, the first look at the menu, and the phrase that puts you immediately in expert hands.
The restaurant is on the second floor — a restored colonial villa in the French Quarter area, wooden shutters, ceiling fans, a courtyard below. A young woman in áo dài meets them at the stairs.
「Chào mừng! Anh/chị đặt bàn chưa?」 The stranger steps forward. 「Xin chào! Chúng tôi đã đặt bàn, hai người, 7 giờ.」 She finds the name. Nods. 「Xin mời ngồi.」
The table is by the window. A pot of lotus tea arrives without being requested.
She hands them a menu. It's in Vietnamese with photographs. The stranger looks at his companion. 「Hôm nay có gì đặc biệt không?」
The server lights up — tonight: grilled cá lăng (snakehead fish) with dill, in season right now. 「Nhờ bạn gọi giúp chúng tôi nhé! Chúng tôi tin bạn!」 She beams. These are the best words she's heard all week.
