In this lesson

You are learning the past marker da: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (da + verb — marking completed actions), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Cafe Giang, 39 Nguyen Huu Huan, Hoan Kiem. The birthplace of ca phe trung — egg coffee. Morning light through narrow windows. You sip and reflect on what you have already eaten in Hanoi.

Cafe Giang — Egg Coffee Morning

Cafe Giang sits on a narrow alley off Nguyen Huu Huan Street in Hoan Kiem. The cafe was founded in 1946 by Nguyen Van Giang, a bartender at the Sofitel Metropole. When fresh milk became scarce during wartime, he whipped egg yolk with condensed milk and Vietnamese coffee. Ca phe trung was born.

The stranger climbs to the second floor. Low wooden stools, walls the color of old parchment. He orders: 「Cho toi mot coc ca phe trung.」 The cup arrives in a bowl of hot water to keep the egg custard warm.

A woman at the next table asks: 「Ban da an sang chua?」 He shakes his head. 「Toi chua an gi ca. Day la lan dau toi thu ca phe trung.」

She smiles: 「Toi da uong o day nhieu lan roi.」 He sips. Custard, bitterness, sweetness. 「Toi da hieu roi.」 Now I understand.
