Lesson 29 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning meeting people: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (meeting and social verbs in the past), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Bun Cha Huong Lien, 24 Le Van Huu, Hai Ba Trung. The "Obama bun cha" — where Barack Obama and Anthony Bourdain sat on plastic stools in 2016. You meet someone at the next table.

Bun Cha Huong Lien — The Obama Table

Bun Cha Huong Lien still has the table preserved behind glass — the one where Obama and Bourdain ate in 2016, two Hanoi beers and bun cha for about six dollars total. The stranger sits at the table next to the display.

A young man sits across from him. Shared tables, as always. The bun cha arrives: grilled pork patties in a sweet-sour fish sauce broth, a basket of rice noodles, fresh herbs.

「Ban da an bun cha bao gio chua?」 the young man asks. The stranger nods. 「Toi da an o cho Dong Xuan tuan truoc. Nhung o day ngon hon!」

They talk. 「Chung toi da noi chuyen ve do an Ha Noi.」 The young man works in IT but knows every bun cha stall in the city. 「Toi da lam quen voi mot nguoi ban moi.」 A new friend, made over grilled pork.
