Lesson 33 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning preferences: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (preference structures), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A bustling com binh dan (everyday rice shop) in Ba Dinh district. Trays of dishes behind glass. You point, you choose, you compare. Now you express what you prefer and why.

Com Binh Dan — Choosing Lunch

Com binh dan — "commoner's rice" — is how most Hanoians eat lunch. A glass display case holds twenty trays of dishes: braised pork belly, fried tofu in tomato sauce, morning glory with garlic, fried egg, bitter melon soup.

The stranger stands before the trays. The woman behind the counter waits. 「Mon nay la gi?」 he points. 「Thit kho tau.」 Next tray: 「Ca kho to.」

「Ban thich cai nao hon?」 she asks, impatient but kind. He decides: 「Toi thich thit kho hon. Va cho toi rau xao nua.」

She scoops rice, ladles braised pork, adds stir-fried greens. 「Mon nao ban thich nhat?」 he asks her. She doesn't hesitate: 「Ca kho to. Tai vi nuoc sot ngot va dam da.」

Everyone at com binh dan has a favorite. His is becoming thit kho — sweet, salty, tender. 「Ngon lam!」
