Bang — Equality Comparisons

Lesson 42 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning equality comparisons: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (equality comparisons), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A conversation about Hanoi vs. Ho Chi Minh City — the great Vietnamese food debate. Sometimes things are equal. Sometimes they are similar. Bang and giong nhu give you the grammar of equality.

Hanoi vs. Saigon — The Eternal Debate

At a shared table near Hoan Kiem Lake, the stranger meets a woman from Ho Chi Minh City visiting Hanoi. The debate begins naturally.

「Pho Ha Noi va pho Sai Gon — giong nhau hay khac nhau?」 the stranger asks.

She considers carefully. 「Khac nhau nhieu! Pho Sai Gon ngot hon, nhieu rau hon. Pho Ha Noi thanh hon, truyen thong hon.」

「Nhung ca hai deu ngon bang nhau, dung khong?」 the stranger tries diplomacy.

She laughs: 「Khong! Pho Sai Gon ngon hon!」 Then pauses. 「Nhung... nuoc dung Ha Noi giong nhu nuoc dung me toi nau. Rat thanh, rat dam da.」

The stranger smiles. Even in disagreement, food connects. 「Moi noi mot vi. Ca hai deu tuyet voi.」 Each place has its own flavor. Both are wonderful.
