Đặt bàn — Making a Reservation

Lesson 16 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning making a reservation: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (reservation vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Chả Cá Lã Vọng, Bún Bò Nam Bộ, or any mid-range Hanoi restaurant that takes reservations. A phone call, a Zalo message, or a walk-in. Three Vietnamese phrases handle all of them.

Đặt Bàn — The Phone Call

Bún Bò Nam Bộ on Hàng Điếu Street serves one of Hanoi's best versions of Southern-style beef noodle salad — a dry noodle dish with fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and charred lemongrass beef. Reservations recommended for dinner.

The stranger calls. Two rings. 「Xin chào, nhà hàng Bún Bò Nam Bộ.」 He steadies himself. 「Xin chào! Tôi muốn đặt bàn, hai người, tối mai 7 giờ, được không?」

A pause. 「Được ạ! Anh/chị có kiêng ăn gì không?」 Any dietary restrictions? 「Không có. Có bàn gần cửa sổ không?」 She checks. 「Có ạ! Xác nhận: hai người, tối mai 7 giờ.」

「Cảm ơn! Tôi muốn xác nhận lại: hai người, tối mai 7 giờ, đúng không?」 — 「Đúng rồi! Chúng tôi chờ anh/chị!」
