Không hiểu — Confusion Recovery

Lesson 5 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning confusion recovery: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (confusion recovery phrases), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Everywhere in Hanoi. Someone speaks at full speed and you catch nothing. These phrases keep you in the conversation — and signal effort, which Vietnamese people deeply appreciate.

Xe Máy — The Motorbike Moment

Hanoi has four million registered motorbikes for eight million people. A young man on a Honda Wave pulls alongside the stranger — apparently offering a ride. He speaks at full speed.

「Xin lỗi, tôi không hiểu. Nói chậm hơn được không? Tôi đang học tiếng Việt.」

The young man grins. He slows down, uses simpler words. The stranger catches a few: đi đâu (go where?), xe ôm (motorbike taxi).

「Hiểu rồi! Cảm ơn, nhưng tôi muốn đi bộ.」 I understand now! Thank you, but I want to walk.

The driver nods and rides off. A complete interaction — imperfect Vietnamese, full warmth.
