You are learning hanoi beer culture: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (social drinking vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Bia Hơi Junction — the corner of Lương Ngọc Quyến and Tạ Hiện Streets, Hoàn Kiếm. Fresh draft beer for 5,000–7,000 VND per glass (~$0.25). The social heart of Hanoi.
6:30pm at Bia Hơi Junction. The pavement entirely covered in plastic stools, three feet from passing motorbikes. Forty Vietnamese, six tourists, two stray dogs, one man selling bánh mì from a basket on his bicycle.
The stranger has found a stool. A woman materializes with a glass of bia hơi before he's asked for it. Cold, slightly cloudy, 6,000 VND. He drinks. The beer is light, refreshing, absolutely correct for this moment.
The two men on the adjacent stools turn. One speaks: 「Bạn từ đâu đến?」 Connection begins. 「Tôi đến từ Mỹ.」 They clink glasses. 「Một, hai, ba, dzo!」 The stranger shouts it with full commitment. The whole table laughs.
「Vui quá! Tôi yêu Hà Nội!」 He means every syllable.
