Theo mùa — Seasonal Shopping

Lesson 14 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning seasonal shopping: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (seasonal vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Vietnam's seasonal foods change what's available, what's excellent, and what to ask for. Knowing the season is knowing the kitchen.

Mùa Vải — Lychee Season

Early June. Baskets of pale pink-red lychees appearing on every street corner, on the backs of bicycles, stacked in pyramids at market stalls. The smell is floral and sweet.

「Mùa này có gì ngon nhất?」 The vendor doesn't hesitate: 「Vải thiều! Đang mùa vải thiều Bắc Giang, ngon nhất năm đó!」

「Lúc nào ngon nhất?」 — 「Bây giờ! Tuần này là đỉnh mùa. Tuần sau là hết rồi.」 Right now. This week is peak. Next week, finished.

「Cho tôi một kg.」 He peels one on the spot. The juice runs down his hand. 「Ngọt quá! Thơm lắm! Năm nay được mùa thật.」
