Lesson 22 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning nyc areas: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (neighborhood vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

New York City's most important neighborhoods: Manhattan (SoHo, West Village, Harlem, Tribeca), Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Park Slope, DUMBO, Bushwick), Queens (Astoria, Flushing, Long Island City). Each has a character, a food scene, and a vocabulary.

West Village — Sunday Afternoon

The West Village is the most beautiful neighborhood in Manhattan — the streets below 14th Street that predate the grid, running at angles, lined with Federal and Greek Revival townhouses from the 1820s–1840s. Hudson Street, Bleecker, Perry, Charles. You can walk for an hour and never repeat a block.

The stranger is walking with Marcus after a long brunch. "What neighborhood is this exactly?"

"West Village. One of the oldest parts of the city."

"This street is so beautiful — it looks nothing like the rest of New York."

"That's the point. Everything above 14th is grid. Everything below is... this."

A bookstore. A bakery that smells of cardamom. A restaurant with three tables on the sidewalk. "What's good to eat around here?" Marcus doesn't even need to think.
