Lesson 85 of 170 · Level 3 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning casual reported speech and quoting: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (informal reported speech: 'be like,' 'go,' and direct quoting in casual american english), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Los Tacos No.1, Times Square / Chelsea Market, afternoon

Taco Talk

So my friend Jess is like, 'We're going to Los Tacos No.1 for lunch,' and I'm like, 'Okay, but is it really that good?' And she goes, 'You literally have no idea.' She was like, 'It's a game-changer,' and honestly I thought she was being dramatic.

We get there and there's already a line. The guy in front of us goes, 'First time?' I'm like, 'Yeah,' and he's like, 'You're going to lose your mind.' I'm starting to think everyone in New York talks about tacos the way other people talk about religion.

I order the adobo chicken. Jess orders the al pastor. We stand at the counter and take our first bites at the same time. She looks at me and I look at her. We're both like, 'Oh my God.' The chicken is perfectly seasoned. The tortilla is warm and fresh. The salsa verde is spot-on.

I'm literally just standing there, speechless. Jess goes, 'Told you.' And I'm like, 'Okay, you were right. This is legit.' Now every time someone asks me for a food recommendation, I'm like, 'Los Tacos No.1. Just trust me.'
