If I Had More Time, I'd Eat Here Every Day — 2nd Conditional

Lesson 86 of 170 · Level 3 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning 2nd conditional: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (second conditional: unreal / hypothetical present or future), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Balthazar, SoHo, weekend brunch

Dreaming at Balthazar

Balthazar in SoHo looks like it was lifted straight from Paris. Red leather booths, brass rails, mirrors everywhere. If I didn't know I was in Manhattan, I'd think I was on the Left Bank. It's the kind of place where you want to sit for hours.

I'm here with my friend Tomoko for Saturday brunch. If we came here every weekend, we'd go broke — but it would be worth it. She orders the eggs Benedict and I get the croque madame. The pastry basket arrives with croissants that are to die for.

Tomoko stares at the steak frites on the next table. 'If I weren't already full, I'd order that,' she says. I laugh. 'If I had a bigger stomach, I'd order one of everything.' We both agree: if we lived closer, we'd be here every Sunday.

After brunch, we walk down Spring Street. 'If I could afford an apartment in SoHo,' I say, 'I'd eat at Balthazar three times a week.' Tomoko smiles. 'If we won the lottery, we could.' We might not win the lottery, but we can still dream — and splurge once in a while.
