Comparing food cultures in Manhattan and Brooklyn neighborhoods

Two Boroughs, One City

When I first moved to New York, everyone told me, 'Manhattan is the real New York.' But after living in Brooklyn for six months, I think Brooklyn is just as exciting as Manhattan -- maybe more.

The food in Brooklyn is as diverse as anywhere in the city. In my neighborhood alone, I can get Jamaican jerk chicken, Polish pierogies, and Yemeni lamb. The restaurants aren't as fancy as Manhattan's, but they're just as delicious -- and way more affordable.

Manhattan has the famous spots: Katz's, Peter Luger, Le Bernardin. But Brooklyn has its own legends. Di Fara Pizza in Midwood. Sahadi's in Brooklyn Heights. L&B Spumoni Gardens in Bensonhurst. The food is as authentic as it gets.

The vibe is different, though. Manhattan is fast, loud, and intense. Brooklyn is just as diverse but more relaxed. My friend from Queens says, 'Queens is as good as both of them.' She's probably right. Every borough has amazing food. That's what makes New York -- it's not one neighborhood. It's all of them together.
