Lesson 87 of 170 · Level 3 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning 3rd conditional: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (third conditional: unreal past — imagining a different past), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Regrets at Le Bernardin

Le Bernardin is one of the most celebrated restaurants in America — three Michelin stars, legendary seafood, fine dining at its finest. If I had known how special it was, I would have saved up for the tasting menu. Instead, I ordered a la carte and missed the full experience.

My date, Priya, chose the seven-course tasting menu. If I had looked at it more carefully, I would have realized it included dishes I couldn't order separately. Each course was more beautiful than the last. The yellowtail with jalapeño, the lobster with a herb broth — I watched with envy.

The sommelier came to our table and recommended a wine pairing. If I had accepted, it would have been another hundred dollars. I declined. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't. Priya said the wine pairing made every course taste different.

If I had planned better, I could have made this a once-in-a-lifetime meal. If I had brought more cash, I might have ordered dessert too. Priya smiled and said, 'Well, now you know. Next time, you'll know exactly what to do.' She was right. If there's a next time, I won't make the same mistakes.
