In this lesson

You are learning separable phrasal verbs in food and life: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (separable phrasal verbs: object placement), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Chelsea Market, Meatpacking District, Saturday morning

Saturday at Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market is the kind of place that overwhelms you in the best way. There are bakeries, seafood counters, taco stands, Italian delis, and artisan chocolate shops. I've been trying to figure out what to eat for fifteen minutes and I still haven't narrowed it down.

My friend Anika has a system. She looks the whole market over first, writes down the top three options, and then tries them out one by one. Today she's putting together a 'tasting tour' — a little bit from each vendor. I decide to follow her lead.

First stop: Los Tacos No.1. I try out the adobo chicken taco. Incredible. Anika writes down 'best taco in NYC' in her phone notes. Second stop: the lobster roll at The Lobster Place. I look it over before I bite — perfectly pink lobster on a buttered roll.

By noon, we've tried out six different foods and written down our favorites. Anika looks over her list. 'I've figured it out,' she says. 'The taco wins.' I agree. Sometimes you need to try everything out before you can narrow it down.
