If I Had Grown Up Here, I'd Know All the Best Spots — Mixed Conditionals

Lesson 90 of 170 · Level 3 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning mixed conditionals: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (mixed conditionals: past condition → present result / present condition → past result), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Juliana's Pizza, DUMBO, Brooklyn, evening

Under the Bridge

Juliana's Pizza sits under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The coal oven has been here since 1990. If I had grown up in this neighborhood, I'd know every pizza place by heart. But I didn't, so tonight my Brooklyn-born friend Mia is my guide.

There's a famous rivalry between Juliana's and Grimaldi's, which is right next door. Mia settles it immediately: 'Juliana's, hands down. If you had tasted both, you wouldn't even ask.' If she weren't such a pizza expert, I might have gone to the wrong one.

We order a classic margherita. The crust is thin and charred from the coal oven. The mozzarella melts perfectly. If I had discovered this place earlier, I would have eaten here a hundred times by now. Instead, this is my first visit.

Mia looks at me and says, 'If you weren't leaving Brooklyn next month, I'd bring you here every Friday.' She's right — if I had moved here instead of Manhattan, my whole New York food experience would be different. Past choices shape present tastes.
