The scene

Union Square Greenmarket, a Saturday morning farmers market

A Morning at Union Square Greenmarket

The Union Square Greenmarket is one of the best farmers markets in New York. Every Saturday, local farmers set up tables and sell food that was picked that morning. Everything is locally sourced -- most farms are within 200 miles of the city.

I went last Saturday. The first vendor I visited sold tomatoes. They were bright red and still warm from the sun. 'These are grown on our farm in the Hudson Valley,' the farmer said. 'They're organic and in season right now.' I bought a bag.

Next, I found an artisan cheese vendor. The cheese was made from goat milk at a small farm in Vermont. She offered me a sample. It was creamy, tangy, and amazing. Then I tried homemade apple cider from an orchard upstate. It was pressed fresh that morning.

What I love about the Greenmarket is the connection. You meet the people who grow your food. Everything is seasonal and sustainable. A chef from a nearby restaurant was buying produce -- he told me, 'I only cook with ingredients from this market. That's what farm-to-table means.' I left with two bags of food and a new appreciation for where my meals come from.
